Homegrown success

On Saturday, Benji Michel found the end point in the net for the second time in as many games and met Daryl Dike for the goal. It was the third straight-season goal contribution for Michel to score his first goal of the regular season against Nashville after receiving an assist in Atlanta the week before. Since signing as Homegrown in 2019, Michel has scored eight goals, the most homegrown in the club’s history, and added two assists in all competitions.

The man of the month

Lions freshman Daryl Dike was named MLS Player of the Month for an August scoring three goals and adding two assists in three games on the Phase 1 schedule for City’s continuation of play. The 2020 MLS SuperDraft selection achieved its first professional goal on its first start at Inter Miami in the Lions Stage 1 kick-off, before continuing that feat three days later against Nashville SC with the first brace of his career. With the award, Dike became the second player in the club’s history to receive the “Player of the Month” award in April 2017 after the former Lion Joe Bendik.

A quick update

Saturday’s game marks the first time Lions have had more than three days between games since the start of the Phase 1 schedule. During this time, Oscar Pareja used 18 different players in a starting role to change the squad. During the current schedule for the continuation of the game, the Lions stand before a reversal from Saturday to Wednesday and vice versa each week. City holds a 2-1-2 record in five games in Phase 1 and is unbeaten in the last four competitions.

Between the sticks

Goalkeeper Pedro Gallese made five saves against Atlanta United on Saturday, a save that is behind his top mark of the season against NYCFC on July 14 at the MLS is Back Tournament. The Peruvian international has played a pivotal role in helping the Lions achieve a +5 goal differential this season. This season, City has only scored three goals in the last five games.

Expansion in Orlando

The Lions set a perfect 2-0 record against the expansion teams of MLS in 2020 at The City Beautiful this year, and beat Inter Miami 2-1 in the MLS is Back tournament before beating Nashville in their first Game at Exploria Stadium 3-1 defeated the Phase 1 continuation of the schedule on August 26th. Overall, Orlando City holds a 4-1-1 record against expansion clubs in their first season.

Same time, different place

When the Lions take on Inter Miami at Exploria Stadium on Saturday, USL team Orlando City B will prepare to face Miami’s League One team Fort Lauderdale CF at Inter Miami CF Stadium. The game will serve as OCB’s first trip south, while Inter Miami’s visit to Exploria Stadium will serve as their first visit to downtown Orlando.
