SLS Brickell Hotel and Residencies opens in Miami
Public gem: The SLS Brickell reflects Miami’s colorful personality
The SLS Brickell in Miami, designed by Arquitectonica, is the latest project by the mega-hotelier SBE (led by Sam Nazarian) and the leading residential construction company The Related Group (led by Jorge Pérez) in collaboration with creative partners Philippe Starck and José Andrés . After building their trusted brand through hotels in destinations like Beverley Hills, Las Vegas and Miami’s South Beach, the SLS Brickell is the first project to combine a hotel with condominiums.
With 133 hotel rooms and 450 residences, the SLS Brickell is located in the heart of downtown Miami’s financial district, forming a prismatic glass cone that rises from the meeting point of the two main streets, Coral Way and South Miami Avenue. Arquitectonica designed the building as a public gem, lighting it up for the night with blue needle lights that stretched from the sky to the street, marking the corners of the facade.
With cultural destinations like the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and the Frost Museum of Science nearby, SLS Brickell has grown into a table maker for Brickell. The developers designed restaurants and bars on the first floor to conjure up a similar social dynamic to the bustling center of Lincoln Road.
“From the gigantic city facade by Markus Linnenbrink to the video installations by Katja Loher, the mysterious sculpture by Bernardí Roig and the fantastic Ray Smith canvases in the living room lobby, we filled the project with first-class museum art,” says The Related Group Carlos Rosso
The triangular plan dictated geometric angular references throughout the architecture. The preferred parts of the building of Bernardo Fort-Brescia, the director of Arquitectonica, are the triangular trampoline balconies: “They fall diagonally like wind-driven rain from the facades or are seen from the street like steps that rise to the sky. Because they are not aligned vertically, one hovers over the road or looks up at the sky when standing at the top. You feel suspended in space, ”he says.
In addition to the sharp, slim design of the facade, the project is characterized by an external mural by Markus Linnenbrink, his largest to date, which was selected for its liveliness and the reflection of Miami’s “colorful personality”. “From the start we knew we wanted a piece that would stop people and make everyone react,” said Carlos Rosso, president of the Related Group’s condominium development division.
‘SLS Brickell provides a glimpse into the future of Brickell and the entire Greater Downtown Miami area. We put the South Beach lifestyle in the middle of urban Brickell, ”says Rosso.
Still, SLS Brickell is still full of personality and playing a new role in the city, says Arash Azarbarzin, president of SBE. “We always say SLS South Beach and SLS Brickell are great sisters. They help and complement each other, but have different personalities. Brickell’s personality is more urban while that of South Beach is more of a resort. ‘The SLS Brickell has more than 15,000 m² of conference space, a spa and two pools and offers both residents and guests the option of luxurious hotel-style living.
