Schwarber’s 11th, 12th HRs In 13 Games Lifts Nationals Over Marlins – CBS Miami

MIAMI (AP) – Kyle Schwarber has homered twice and raised his season overall to 21 by scoring 12 in his last 13 games, and the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 7-3 on Thursday night for their 10th win in 11th Play.

Schwarber led the first to pull a hanging curveball from Cody Poteet (2-3) to the right for his fifth home run of the season.

Josh Harrison singled out with one out in the second, Victor Robles left and with two outs, Schwarber sent a 2-0 fastball over the wall in the center for a 4-0 lead.

According to STATS, Schwarber was the first player in Major League history to make 11 homers in 13 games from first place in the strike order. He became the fourth player to make eight homers and 15 RBIs in five games, alongside Shawn Green, Manny Ramirez and Frank Howard.

Juan Soto later added the first of his two RBI doubles in the inning.

Joe Ross (4-7) allowed four hits in seven scoreless innings and helped Washington extend its winning streak to five.

Poteet gave up five runs, six hits and four walks in three innings. The 26-year-old rookie right-hander is 3-0 in his last four starts, having finished 2-0 in his first three games in the big league.

Miami has lost four straight times and scored five runs while sliding.

Jazz Chisholm hit a triple homer in the eighth homer against Justin Miller, Chisholm’s ninth homer and first since June 10th.

Before the national anthem, there was a minute’s silence for the victims of the condominium building that collapsed in Surfside, Florida on Thursday. The coastal city next to Miami Beach is 13 miles from the Marlins Stadium.


Nationals: RHP Stephen Strasburg (neck strain) has thrown from 50 feet with increased intensity but there is no schedule when he could throw off a hill.

Marlins: RHP Jordan Holloway (groin) was activated from the injured list and opted for Triple-A Jacksonville.


Nationals: LHP Jon Lester (1-2, 3.96) starts the second game of the series on Friday evening.

Marlins: RHP Pablo López (3-4, 2.86) starts Friday after playing seven shutout innings against the Chicago Cubs on June 19.
