Peter Thomas, the ex-husband of The Real Housewives of Atlanta star Cynthia Bailey, is opening a restaurant and lounge concept, Bar One, in South Beach.

58-year-old Thomas made headlines in March when he was arrested at Miami International Airport on a Louisiana arrest warrant for writing fraudulent checks. After spending six days in jail, he released a seven-minute IGTV video to his 647,000 followers to “dispel the rumors,” which Page Six reported. Additional coverage of the arrest on Bravo’s blog, the Daily Dish, mentioned RHOA stars Nene and Gregg Leakes, who helped Thomas “softly open his new Bar One Miami Beach restaurant in January” this year.

Now, five months later, various social media sites have sprung up for @baronemiamibeach and a website that claims the restaurant will open in August. Contributions over the past few weeks have included casting calls to recruit staff, from chefs to security guards, as well as teaser photos and videos of the room located on West Avenue in the Bentley Bay Condominiums. The room overlooking Biscayne Bay and close to the MacArthur Causeway is tucked away at the southernmost end of the suites at the back of the building by the marina. The prominent space at the front of the building, once used by Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza and then Mozzafiato, still has a sign saying it is available for rent.

Thomas founded Club One and Sports One in Charlotte, North Carolina, but the Bar One opening appears to be his first big business in Miami. Over the decades, he owned and operated a variety of venues, starting with the South Beach Spot 5th Street Night Club, which became the BarCode Restaurant & Lounge, and Savannah’s Restaurant, a popular hangout for Oprah Winfrey and Miami Heat players at the time.

The venue promises to be a prominent meeting place for “socially savvy tourists and celebrities to chill out” with a soulful and chic energy. A view of the water and “discreet cabanas” on a lush terrace will conjure up a “tropical whisper bar” with a Caribbean and Afro-Cuban soul and cuisine. The menu, which is not ready yet, will feature fan favorites from his Charlotte operations, such as jerk papaya wings, curry shrimp, salmon bites, and lobster empanadas. A representative from Bar One mentioned that celebrity chef Amaris Jones was advising the menu.

The website and Facebook page clearly indicate an opening date in August, but a rep said it was a soft opening with a limited menu and invitation-only. The opening is scheduled for September 12th.
