Pastis, Iconic New York City Bistro, to Open in Miami

Pastis, New York’s legendary take on a classic Parisian bistro, is on its way to Miami.
Restaurateurs Keith McNally and Stephen Starr will open Pastis Miami at 380 NW 26th Street in Wynwood in 2022. The property is owned by Miami developer David Edelstein.
The 8,000 square meter restaurant will replicate the look of its siblings in Manhattan with mirrors, subway tiles, and warm wood tones. McNally, who founded the original Pastis in New York, will co-design the restaurant with Ian McPheely of Paisley Design.
Pastis was one of the first chic restaurants in the Meatpacking District of Lower Manhattan when McNally opened it in 1999. Before that, the neighborhood was filled with meat wholesalers and underground clubs, and the cobblestone streets were sometimes covered in blood in the wee hours of the morning.
McNally, the man behind fashionable New York establishments like the Odeon, Lucky Strike, Balthazar, and Minetta Tavern, used Pastis at a time when visitors to the Meatpacking District were looking for a “date” for the night rather than a bowl of steamed clams .
The risk turned into a reward when the bistro became a magnet in Lower Manhattan for oysters after work and little nightcaps from its namesake, a French aperitif that, like its cousin absinthe, turns pearly green when mixed with water. The restaurant was featured in an episode of Sex and the City. James Gandolfini of Soprano’s fame lived a block away and was an integral part.
The original Pastis closed in 2014, a victim of its own success. Restoration hardware is now in its place. In 2019, McNally and Philadelphia-based restaurateur Stephen Starr revived the concept and opened a new Pastis bistro on Gansevoort Street, about a block south of the original.
