Obamas announce family dog Bo has died – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

(CNN) – The Obamas announced Saturday that their beloved family dog, Bo, had died.

“This afternoon was difficult for our family. We said goodbye to our best friend – our dog Bo – after battling cancer, ”said former First Lady Michelle Obama in a statement posted on Instagram on Saturday.

The Obama family got Bo shortly after they moved into the White House, fulfilling Barack Obama’s campaign promise to have his daughters Sasha and Malia in return for their time on the campaign trail.

“Today our family has lost a true friend and loyal companion,” wrote the former president on Twitter on Saturday. The pool was unshakable in the summer with children, lived for waste at the dining table and had great hair. “

Michelle Obama also wrote that Bo was there for the former first couple when their lives “slowed down” and helped them “get the girls into college and adjust to empty nests”.

“For over a decade, Bo has been a constant, gentle presence in our lives – happy to see us on our good days, our bad days, and every day in between,” wrote the former president.

In his treatise “A Promised Land,” Obama recalled how “of all the joys that first year at the White House would bring, none quite compared to the arrival of Bo in mid-April, a huggable, four-legged bundle of black fur with one snow-white chest and front paws. “

Bo, a Portuguese water dog, had come to the Obamas as a gift from the late Senator Ted Kennedy and his wife Victoria.

“It was an incredibly thoughtful gesture – not only because the breed was hypoallergenic (a necessity due to Malia’s allergies), but also because the Kennedys made sure Bo was house trained before he came to see us,” wrote Obama.

The Obamas said they will miss Bo very much, “but we are grateful that he had such a joyful life of cuddles, fetch games and evenings on the couch.”

“We also know that we are not the only ones who took care of Bo and we are grateful for all the love you have shown him over the years,” the family said. The Obamas also have another Portuguese water dog, Sunny.
