The body of Diani Gomez Sanchez was not found until early Sunday evening in the bushes on the dam near the Pelican Harbor Marina.

“First we investigated murder. But now we think it was a hit-and-run that was called on Saturday at 8:43 am, “said Art Acevedo, Miami police chief.

Acevedo said the gray sedan had severe front damage on the passenger side and likely a broken windshield.

Gomez Sanchez’s family said they left the house around 6:30 a.m. for their run on Saturday.

Her uncle, Denis Omar Gomez, said the family didn’t give it much thought as they had done it several times.

When the 16-year-old did not come home, her family called the police and started handing out leaflets. Gomez said he did just that when he found his niece’s body near the Pelican Harbor Marina.

“I saw her phone and said this was my niece’s phone, and then I saw her shirt that her mother supposedly was wearing,” he said.

Her family said she was polite and focused on school. She attended Miami Senior High.

“They took away the only niece I had in this country. They took away the most beautiful thing I had in my life, ”said Gomez.
