From accountant to brewery owner to radio host, Johnathan Wakefield of J. Wakefield Brewing in Miami is now the voice behind SiriusXM’s first and only craft beer show.
The Beer Hour With Johnathan Wakefield debuted on May 27 and will air every Friday at 7 p.m. on SiriusXM’s business channel 132 (reruns on Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 9 p.m. and can be downloaded as podcasts on Pandora).
Each hour-long episode is recorded in the taproom of the Wynwood Brewery in Wakefield and features two guests: one from the brewing world and another prominent figure in popular culture, from chefs and artists to musicians and athletes.
Wakefield and his co-host, J Wakefield chief brewer and operations manager Maria Cabré, hope the show will give listeners a unique behind-the-scenes look at the world of brewing – and non-beer pros – through the shared love of the craft beer industry.

“The show is more than just craft beer. It’s really about education in different segments of the business world, ”Wakefield told the New Times. “As this is the business channel, we always start with craft beer, but we also learn who they are, where they come from, how they grow and where they see their business developing.”
“We had fun and educational doing these shows,” added Cabré. “We can sit down with someone and really chat with them and talk to them about where they came from, how they started, and how they got into the industry. That’s the real courage of the show – hearing these stories, talking to you friends and co-workers, and finding out more about them. It’s very rewarding. ”
So far, Wakefield and Cabré have discussed everything from brewing diversity with Crowns & Hops Brewing co-founder Teo Huner to Australian barbecue culture with Edge Steak and bar chef Aaron Brooks. Other guests include comic illustrator Jeff Dekal and August Burns Red bassist Dustin Davidson.
“From my background behind the desk doing bookkeeping, to being a brewery owner in the craft beer world, to being a radio show host, this has been a crazy evolution,” says Wakefield. “I never thought I’d do that in a million years – with Maria by my side – and it’s all still pretty surreal. I am enjoying the opportunity. ”
