Marriott’s Moxy Miami Brings a Taste of Mexico to South Beach

Six food-and-drink concepts have arrived with Moxy Miami South Beach, the first resort-style hotel under the Moxy Hotels brand from Marriott International, which is now opening in the Art Deco district.
Marriott’s millennial-focused brand, which to date includes more than 70 hotels in North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, debuted at 915 Washington Avenue in February with an eight-story hotel with 202 rooms, two swimming pools and a fitness center outdoors and the nearby Moxy Beach Club.
“The project was originally conceived about five years ago when the space consisted of a few low-rise retail buildings along Washington Avenue,” Mitchell Hochberg, president of Lightstone, the developer of the project, told the New Times. “We were able to keep the original Art Deco shop windows from the 1930s and add a completely modern building on top that has all the advantages of a new building with the history and culture of the historic structures.”
Moxy South Beach is Lightstone’s first Moxy hotel, opening outside of New York City following the launch of Moxy Times Square, Moxy Chelsea and Moxy East Village. The South Beach is a budget-friendly concept with prices starting at $ 159 per night. It’s a modern take on mid-century Havana and contemporary Mexico City. The guest rooms are decorated in pastel colors and individually designed by Miami artist Aquarela Sabol. They have floor-to-ceiling windows and space-maximizing storage solutions.
The hotel’s food and beverage program is based on Mexican, Caribbean and local flavors and is overseen by Sven Vogtland and Alan Drummond, co-founders of Coyo Taco and the 1-800-Lucky Asian Food Hall in Wynwood.
“We saw the opportunity to bring a touch of unique experiences to Miami Beach, all under one roof,” says Hochberg. “We met dozens of potential partners looking for a group that would not only create great food, but most importantly, create experiences you can’t find anywhere else in Miami. Once we met the Coyo Taco Group, we knew that this is the case. ” Perfect. Located in the lobby near check-in, the Moxy bar anchors the vibe of the hotel with a cocktail list and an installation showing the phone number of El Floridita, Hemingway’s most popular watering hole in Havana. Across from the bar is Los Buenos, an all-day bodega and taco stand that serves tacos with hand-pressed tortillas as well as burrito bowls, breakfast items and coffee drinks.
On the second floor rooftop, Serena has an extensive selection of shareable plates, including aguachile (a shrimp ceviche native to western Mexico), grilled cacti and prawns, and a uni and crab tostada. Nearby is a cabana-lined pool with a see-through cutout below that overlooks the lobby (and vice versa).

Chef Scott Linquist’s menus showcase traditional Mexican techniques, including sourcing corn for tortillas and other products, and making in-house nixtamal and masa.
“I always say I’m a gringo on the outside, but my heart is Mexican,” says Linquist. “I’ve traveled all over Mexico to study the characteristics of each region’s cuisine.”
Upside, the hotel’s rooftop bar on the eighth floor, is reserved for hotel guests who can enjoy a drink in a shallow pool or in an outdoor demonstration area surrounded by panoramic views.
Two concepts are still in progress. Como Como is a raw food bar with a menu that also uses a charcoal grill. The dimly lit mezcalista lounge offers 100 types of rare mezcals and tequilas. Both are slated to open this month.
