Marlins Relinquish Lead, Lose To Nationals 2-1 – CBS Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami / AP) – Kyle Schwarber led the tenth inning with a two-run homer, and the Washington Nationals, supported by a good debut from Jon Lester, rallied 2-1 past the Miami Marlins on Friday night .

When Josh Bell started the extra inning as an automatic runner on the second base, Schwarber hit a 0-1 fastball to the right of Yimi Garcia (2-2). It was Schwarber’s second walk-off homer of the season.

Brad Hand (2-0) threw two innings for the win.

Garrett Cooper’s single gave Jose Devers a 1-0 lead at the Marlins.

Lester, Schwarber’s former team-mate for the Chicago Cubs, threw five goalless innings in his first game for Washington. Released from the list of injured before the game, he allowed five hits and two walks while hitting one on 70 fields.

The 37-year-old Lester was one of nine internationals who were quarantined ahead of the season due to COVID-19 logs. Four players tested positive while five others were quarantined after contact tracing found they may have been exposed.

Lester signed a one-year deal with Washington in late January after six seasons with the Cubs, going 77-44 with a 3.64 ERA in 171 starts.

Marlins starter Pablo Lopez threw seven scoreless innings. He allowed six hits and two walks while hitting two.

Yadiel Hernandez had three goals for Washington. But the Nationals played four doubles, three to end the innings.


Marlins: RHP Elieser Hernandez (Right Bicep Inflammation) hosted a bullpen session on Wednesday and is expected to throw another one this weekend. … INF Brian Anderson (left oblique load) was expected to do punch exercises on the field.

Nationals: RHP Stephen Strasburg (right shoulder) throws to 200 feet on level ground and is expected to throw his first bullpen session this weekend. … VON Juan Soto (left shoulder) started with light throwing on Thursday and threw again on Friday.


Marlins: RHP Paul Campbell (0-1) starts for the first time in the Major League and for the fifth time.

Nationals: LHP Patrick Corbin (0-3) is 2-1 with an ERA of 2.22 in four home starts against the Marlins since joining the Nationals in 2019.
