Trent Grisham had two hits and an RBI for the Padres, who won the first two of the four-game series.

The NL home run leader Fernando Tatís Jr. Pinch scored in ninth place and was eliminated on a drive to the Deep Center. Padres manager Jayce Tingler rested the all-star shortstop, saying he is trying to keep his players as fresh as possible.

Pham’s solo shot and Manny Machado’s RBI slip in the first gave San Diego a quick 2-0 lead. Pham drove Miami starter Zach Thompson’s first throw over the center right wall for his 11th homer of the season while Machado drove in Jake Cronenworth who tripled.

Musgrove hit a double in the second brace and hit Grisham’s single.

The Marlins cut off in the second game against Adam Duvalls solo homer and in the third RBI double by Jesús Aguilar to 3-2.

The Padres extended their lead in the eighth round after a litter from first baseman Aguilar out of Wil Myers’ Grounder passed catcher Sandy León, allowing Cronenworth to score in third and Machado in second.

Pierce Johnson relieved Musgrove and threw a goalless seventh place for a double and a walk. Drew Pomeranz followed with a goalless eighth and Mark Melancon threw a goalless ninth place for his best 30th save in the major league at 34 chances.
