Girls Inc. Extends Network to Greater Miami

We look forward to working together locally to develop the talent and potential of girls in Miami and empower this diverse and vibrant community.

Girls Inc. expands its reach with the introduction of Girls Inc. from Greater Miami. The youth organization works with schools and communities in 350 cities across the United States and Canada, and provides mentoring relationships, safe spaces, and evidence-based programs that are proven to contribute to success to more than 134,000 girls annually.

This expansion comes at a time when more than half of girls enrolled in Miami-Dade public schools are economically disadvantaged and 72% of young Miami women who are out of school and have no college degree , are also unemployed. A girl-friendly, safe, and affirmative environment is also crucial, as the number of girls in Florida feeling unsafe at school or going to school or dropping out of school has nearly doubled in the past 10 years.

“Far too many girls in Miami face significant social obstacles that, without the right tools and support, compromise their ability to thrive in school, life and work,” said Virginia Akar, executive director of Girls Inc., Greater Miami. “We are very excited to be joining the Girls Inc. network, which will enable us to strengthen our capacities and make our impact in the Miami community deeper.”

Akar, a lawyer and human rights attorney, founded Strong Girls Inc. (SGI) in 2017 to help girls in the Miami area improve their academic, professional, and life outcomes. The organization, now affiliated with Girls Inc., will continue to partner with Title 1 schools in Miami-Dade County, offering evidence-based programs to help girls acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes they need to be successful now and as adults.

“Girls are naturally powerful. When girls are given the right opportunities and support, they become change agents for themselves and others, “said Stephanie J. Hull, Ph.D., President and CEO of Girls Inc.” We look forward to working together on the ground to do that Develop the talent and potential of girls in Miami and help strengthen this diverse and vibrant community. “

Girls Inc. is changing the lives of girls in a positive and lasting way. Recent data from the American Institutes for Research found that girls who participated in Girls Inc. programming were more likely to participate in activities and express beliefs that lead to physical and mental well-being, academic achievement, and leadership development. Girls were more likely to be engaged and in school, less suspended, and preparing for life after high school.
