MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Former CBS4 News journalist Michele Gillen has died.

Michelle was a passionate journalist who was committed to helping those who couldn’t help themselves.

In 2006 her series “The Fortress Floor” highlighted the need to help mentally ill inmates in the Miami-Dade County Jail.

She returned to prison seven years later to see what had changed.

In 2012, Michele and a team of CBS4 News journalists shared the stories of Holocaust survivors who returned to Auschwitz to share their stories in hopes that no one would ever forget the atrocities they went through.

But perhaps she was most proud of the “Adopt a Bear” program she founded.

The bears given to disadvantaged children in the juvenile justice system who were going through difficult moments in their lives.
