Former Aide For Embattled Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz Claims Sex Crime Allegations Are ‘Baseless’ – CBS Miami
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A former employee of contested Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz spoke to reporters Monday after FBI agents visited his home in connection with a federal investigation into whether Gaetz had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl.
Former military director Nathan Nelson said the allegations against Gaetz were unfounded.

“They told me that media representatives had reached out to them claiming that I was previously aware of Congressman Gaetz’s involvement in illegal activities. They claimed that based on this knowledge, I resigned from my position as Director of Military Affairs. I’m here this morning to say that nothing could be further from the truth. Neither I nor any other member of Congressman Gaetz were aware of any illegal activity, ”Nelson said.
Nelson resigned from office on Friday. According to sources, this was done “on principle”. Nelson said that was just not true.
“This unsubstantiated allegation against me keeps me convinced that the allegations against Congressman Gaetz are also fabricated and are merely an attempt to discredit a very vocal conservative.”
The Florida Republican has been in a series of controversies since news broke last week of a Justice Department investigation into an alleged sexual relationship with a teenager and possible violations of sex trafficking laws.

The Gaetz investigation began during the Trump administration when William Barr was attorney general. The Justice Department has focused on alleged cash payments Gaetz made to several women who later told others it was in exchange for sex.
The congressman has not been charged with a crime and has denied any wrongdoing.
Gaetz asserts that the allegations are part of an extortion act against him.
Meanwhile, Gaetz wrote a comment that appeared in the Washington Examiner on Monday saying he would not step down from Congress.

Gaetz suggested that he be attacked by political enemies because he “loathes the swamp”. 38-year-old Gaetz was one of the most loyal defenders of former President Donald Trump. So far, Gaetz has received almost no public support from other Congressional Republicans and none from Trump.
