Cuba’s oldest brewery is now the newest in Miami with the completion of Wynwoods Cervecería La Tropical. The bespoke complex is the realization of a passionate project led by the company’s CEO, Manny Portuondo, whose family bought the land on which the original Cuban brewery once stood. The result is a sprawling 28,000 square meter space that houses a production brewery, taproom, and restaurant, plus a live music stage and outdoor botanical garden that honors the brewery’s past. Master brewer Matt Weintraub will deliver more than 20 rotating beers with 4.5 percent ABV La Original, a Viennese-style amber lager whose recipe dates back to 1888, and Nativo Key, a 4.5 percent ABV session -IPA with tropical notes of mango and passion, anchored are fruit and pineapple. From a Latin American-Caribbean palette, chef Cindy Hutson has put together a Miami menu that ranges from tapas, flatbread and sandwiches to her own spin on a frita burger, topped with chorizo, minced pork, potatoes and tomato jam on brioche. You’ll be grateful for such hearty fare when you try the brewery’s Tropilina, a high-octane tropical double IPA with hints of citrus, pineapple, guava, and grapefruit.
