Ammon Bundy announces run for Idaho governor – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

(CNN) – Ammon Bundy, the rancher who attracted national attention when he led an armed occupation of state in Oregon, has announced his candidacy for governor of Idaho.

“I’m running for governor because I’m fed up with all the political junk, just like you,” Bundy said in a video announcing his campaign on Saturday. “I’m sick of our freedoms being taken away from us and I’m sick of the corruption that is rampant in our state government.”

He added, “We have a great opportunity in Idaho not only to safeguard our rights and liberties, but we can also thrive by practicing the principles of freedom and prosperity passed down to us by our Founding Fathers and anchored in our state. expand and maintain US Constitution. “

Bundy is officially competing in a race that already includes Janice McGeachin, the state lieutenant governor who has repeatedly and publicly clashed with Idaho’s GOP Governor Brad Little over the state’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. Little – along with Republicans Jeff Cotton, Chris Hammond, Edward Humphreys, Lisa Marie, and Cody Usabel – have submitted documents required to submit a bid in the governor’s race, which the Cook Political Report classifies as a “solid Republican” .

Late last month, Little repealed an executive order banning mask mandates by government agencies that McGeachin had enacted just the day before during his absence. The governor, who described the move as an “irresponsible, self-serving political stunt”, said at the time that “the action that took place during my trip this week is not government-related”.

Bundy’s campaign page also contains criticism of Little’s handling of the pandemic, as well as allegations and misrepresentations against him.

Bundy made national headlines in 2016 when he led an armed occupation of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge in Oregon that lasted 41 days and ended in an intense police altercation that resulted in the death of one person. Bundy and 15 others were indicted by a federal grand jury. He was later acquitted.

More recently, he has been ordered to stay away from the Idaho Statehouse after refusing to leave the building in a protest last year when he and others at the State Capitol called for an end to the state of emergency.

He was charged with trespassing and resisting arrest. Then he missed his trial in March after he was denied entry to the Ada County Courthouse for refusing to wear a mask.

Bundy’s gubernatorial efforts hit a roadblock last month when he ran. According to the Idaho State Department, a political treasurer must be registered to vote in the state. Bundy – who listed himself as his own campaign treasurer – was not on Idaho’s electoral roll, according to state records.

The Idaho governor’s primaries are scheduled for next year.
