2020’s most popular baby names certainly look familiar – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports
(CNN) – Olivia and Liam were America’s favorite names for girls and boys in 2020. This comes from the Social Security Administration’s annual list of Top Baby Names released on Friday.
In 2020, the three most popular female and male names stayed the same for a second year in a row. Olivia, Emma, and Ava were the three most popular names for girls, and Liam, Noah, and Oliver were the most popular for boys.
Henry re-entered the top 10 boy name list at number 9 for the first time in over a century. According to the SSA, the name is growing in popularity and last appeared on SSA’s top ten list in 1910.
SSA also revealed the five fastest growing names in 2020, a reflection of pop culture in terms of name trends. Zyair was the fastest growing No. 1 name for boys and Avayah for girls.
The list follows a dramatic decline in the US national birth rate. The National Center for Health Statistics of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released data showing that the country’s birth rate fell more than 6% in the most recent quarter from 2020, a sharp drop from the same period in the year 2019.
SSA has published the country’s most popular names since 1997, with lists dating back to 1880. The agency uses social security card applications to compile the annual list.
According to the SSA, Michael has been the most popular male baby name over the past 100 years, ranking first 44 times. In the same years, Mary was ranked the No. 1 Most Popular Female Name 35 times.
