2 women caught on video assaulting man after he argued with Metromover security over mask rule – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports
MIAMI (WSVN) – Miami-Dade police are investigating an attack a metro mover driver claims to have suffered by two women after initially refusing to wear a mask for safety reasons.
The man, who wanted to remain anonymous, said he was met and slashed on a layover in downtown Miami on Tuesday afternoon.
“As I got off the train, the first step I took, the woman hit me in the face and neck area and the guard could clearly see what was going on,” he said.
He said it all started with some confusion about the mask mandate.
He thought that following an executive order recently signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, masks were no longer required for public transportation. But when he got on the metro mover …
“The security guard told me to put my mask on,” the man said.
He told 7News that he had his mask on, but then started talking to the guard about why he thought he didn’t need it.
“I have a problem with the fact that he’s taking away my rights from what the governor has now immediately revoked not to wear a mask and he’s making me wear a mask,” the man said.
“The approach here shows Florida as a pioneer,” said DeSantis.
The executive order, signed by the governor on Monday, suspends all local emergency orders related to COVID-19. As the Mayor of Miami-Dade County said in a statement, “a federal mask mandate for public transportation remains in place.”
The man said that when he was having the discussion with security, two other people on board were involved.
“Then there were these two women who sat next to them and started making comments to me that were inappropriate,” the man said.
He said that was when he packed his cell phone and started recording.
The man and the other two passengers have a verbal argument about the fact that he is filming them.
When he gets out, his phone is hit and he said he was also physically injured at the time.
He called the police and reported what had happened, but said he was upset with how security had handled the situation.
“An attack actually occurred in his presence and he did nothing about it,” he said.
The names of the two women on the cellphone video were not disclosed.
7News reached out to the Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works for comment and they have not responded yet.
