NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) – A man and woman were rushed to hospital after their SUV crashed into a canal in northwest Miami-Dade and the crews received crucial assistance from a quick-thinking Good Samaritan.

Miami-Dade police and fire services responded to the scene near West Okeechobee Road and Northwest 118th Avenue Saturday morning.

The Good Samaritan Roberto Gonzalez spoke through a translator and said he had done his best to rescue the driver and passengers in the vehicle when he arrived at the scene shortly after the accident.

“I saw the woman and thought of my mother. That’s it; I had to help her, ”he said.

Gonzalez said he tried to reach out to the couple trapped in the car.

“I left my personal belongings and jumped in. I was able to save a woman but when I helped her get to safety I looked and the vehicle was already under water and I couldn’t go back to the man. Gonzalez said.

MDFR Lt. Omar Vega said divers could pull the male victim out of the channel.

“When we got here, there were victims at the dam. A good Samaritan stopped and pulled out the first victim, ”he said. “Within eight minutes of the call, we had the divers in the water and they were pulling out a second victim who went to a local hospital.”

Only in Dade’s video captured the car as it was pulled out of the canal.

The victims were checked for injuries and taken to a local hospital. The man is in critical condition and the woman is in stable condition.

It is not known why the SUV drove into the canal.
